Physical Health

Physical health is critical for overall well-being and is the most visible of the various dimensions of health. It is the soundness of the body, freedom from disease or abnormality, and the condition of optimal well-being.

Singaporeans’ Life Expectancy at birth has risen from 83.2 years in 2010 to 84.8 years in 2017. Our Health Adjusted Life Expectancy (HALE) increased from 72.9 years to 74.2 years

However, there has also been an increase in the number of people living with chronic illness.

Mental Health

Mental health is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community” It helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

There were 397 reported suicides in 2018, compared with 361 the year before. This raised the suicide rate to 8.36 deaths per 100,000 Singapore residents, up from 7.74 in 2017. The five most common mental health conditions that were seen at public hospitals were Schizophrenia, Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar disorder and Substance Abuse.

Emotional Health

Emotional health is a person’s ability to accept and manage feelings through challenge and change. People who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They’re able to cope with life’s challenges. Emotional health is having both an awareness of your emotions and the ability to manage and express those feelings in an age-appropriate manner.

Mood and anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses. About one in seven Singaporeans have experienced a mood or anxiety disorder at some point of their lives

Brain Health is an emerging and growing concept that encompasses neural development, plasticity, functioning, and recovery across the life course. Good brain health is a state in which every individual can realize their own abilities and optimize their cognitive, emotional, psychological and behavioural functioning to cope with life situations.

Neurological conditions are the leading cause of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) and the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for 9 million deaths per year.
